City Tigers earn Tip Off championship

City Tigers match up with Highland Rim Hornets

Fayetteville’s Middle School Tigers swept the field in the 2012 Lions Club Tip Off Tournament.

Ninth Grade Academy again hosted the weeklong event.

The Tigers won over Highland Rim’s Hornets in a battle the final game, 43-41.

City is led by Coach Jason Williams. Coach Heath Dehart leads the Hornets.

The Tigers sent Highland Rim to the losers’ bracket in a 47-37 shootout on Thursday night.

The Hornets won their semifinal game Saturday, defeating South Lincoln, 42-24. The win gave them another shot at the Tigers.

The rematch between City and County was a tough physical game, going down to the wire. The Hornets were forced to play two games in one day.

Saturday the Tigers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but following a time out, the Hornets took the lead, 6-4, at the 3:35 mark on a basket by Cole Beddingfield. Highland Rim would not trail again in the first half. The Hornets were up 13-8 at the end of one. Eight of those points came from Beddingfield.

Both teams added 11 points in the second quarter. The Hornets were up 24-19 at the intermission.

In the third quarter, the fresh legs of the Tigers began to pay off. With 3:35 on the clock, Akoyai Dyer bombed a 3-pointer, knotting the game at 26-26. Highland Rim recovered the lead on a free throw by Holt Richardson at the 2:28 mark. Trailing by two, City’s Michael Buchanan tied it again at 30-30 with 9 seconds remaining in the period.

The Tigers took the lead for the first time early in the fourth, 32-30, with a basket by Cain McWilliams. City would not trail again. It seemed the Tigers were well on their way, up 42-35 with 1:29 remaining in the game, but Holt Richardson nailed two from the arch in the final minute, the last coming with 10 seconds on the clock making it a 42-41 ball game.

But, with two seconds in the game, Tiger Mikael Buchanan dropped one from the line for the final score of the night. Highland Rim called a time out with four-tenths of a second on the clock, but the floor-length toss missed its mark.

Richardson accounted for 10 of the Hornets’ 11 points in the quarter. The Tigers had the win, 43-41.

Cain McWilliams led for City with 12 points. Akoyai Dyer, Worth Watson and Mikael Buchanan had 9. James Fee scored 4.

The Tigers were 1 for 9 from the line, shooting 11 percent. Worth Watson hit three from long range; Akoyai Dyer had one.

Cole Beddingfield and Holt Richardson finished with 16 points. Kyle Clem had 4; Zac Tennison, 3; and Alex Suszczynski had 2.

The Hornets were 6 of 13 from the line, shooting 46 percent. Holt Richardson hit three shots from the arch.
