Cannon, community leader, dies at 83

William J. (Bill) Cannon, who served for six years as a Lincoln County commissioner, died Thursday morning (July 18, 2013) at Donalson Care Center after an extended illness.

Mr. Cannon, who was 83 and a resident of Fayetteville, served on the Lincoln County Commission in the early to mid-1990’s. Additionally, he was a member of the 1989 Lincoln Leadership Class, served on Leadership’s board of directors for several years and was a member of the Lincoln County Health System Foundation.

A native of Fort Valley, Ga., he was the son of the late John Jefferson and Nannie Belle Mullis Cannon. Mr. Cannon was a graduate of the University of Georgia and a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the 82nd Airborne Division.

He retired from Ralston Purina Company and was a real estate investor. He was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanne Scarboro Cannon; sons, Steven Cannon and David Cannon and wife, Marcia, all of Fayetteville; grandchildren, Bryant Cannon of Utah, and Curt Cannon and Amy Ann McCormick, both of Fayetteville.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday morning at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Todd Jenkins officiating. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery. The family asked that memorials be made to the First Presbyterian Church.
