The Knights of Riverside Christian Academy beat Evangel Family Christian Academy in Montgomery last Friday, for their third varsity football road win in a row; their overall season record is now 5-3.
The majority of the first half belonged to EFCA. They scored the first touchdown of the night on a run to the end zone with 9:12 left in the first quarter, but RCA junior, Josh Brooks, blocked the extra point kick, making the score RCA, 0 EFCA, 6.
Evangel scored a second touchdown with 9:39 left in the half. The extra point attempt was no good, giving EFCA a 12-0 lead.
Then RCA quarterback Reagan Eldridge connected with Seth Finch on a 25-yard pass for a Knight touchdown with 4:40 left in the half; Josh Brooks caught Eldridge’s pass in the end zone for the two-point conversion to add eight points to the board for RCA.
Nathan Moose scored the Knights’ second touchdown on a seven-yard run with 2:31 left in the second quarter, and Reagan Eldridge ran the ball in the end zone for the two-point conversion, bringing the score to 16-12 Knights.
Evangel Family scored one more touchdown with less than 10 seconds to go in the half. The extra point attempt was no good, for a score of RCA, 16 EFCA, 18 at halftime.
Early in the third quarter, RCA freshman Caleb Durham made a great catch on a pass from Reagan Eldridge. He was hit by a defender almost immediately which caused him to fumble the ball, but his teammate Ryan Eldridge was there to recover the fumble and run it in the end zone, giving RCA the go ahead score. Josh Brooks caught the two-point conversion pass to make the score 24-18, with RCA leading.
Josh Brooks scored again on a 25-yard pass from Reagan Eldridge with 3:25 left in the third quarter. The extra point attempt was no good for a score of 30-18.
Reagan Eldridge would score one rushing touchdown at the two-minute warning on a seven-yard run; the extra point attempt was no good for a score of 36-18.
EFCA scored the last touchdown of the night on a pass with less than a minute to go in the game; the two-point conversion attempt was good for a final score of RCA, 36, EFCA, 26.
The Knight offense was mostly passing against EFCA. Reagan Eldridge completed 16 of 25 passes for 277 yards with two touchdowns, no interceptions, and no fumbles.
Josh Brooks led the team in receiving yardage with 10 catches for a total of 165 yards, one touchdown, six first down conversions, and no fumbles. Seth Finch had four catches for a total of 61 yards, one touchdown, two first down conversions, and no fumbles. Ryan Eldridge had one catch for 40 yards and a first down conversion, and Caleb Durham had one catch for 10 yards.
The Knights had several players step up on defense to make plays and give the offense a better advantage. Josh Brooks had 12 tackles, two assisted tackles, and one blocked extra point kick. Reagan Eldridge had three tackles, six assisted tackles, two deflected passes, one caused fumble, and one fumble recovery. Austin Wooten had six tackles, one fumble recovery, and one deflected pass. Nathan Elrod had one tackle, two assisted tackles, one fumble recovery, and a blocked punt. Seth Finch had four tackles, three assisted tackles, and one quarterback hurry. Josh Hill had three tackles and three assisted tackles. Ryan Eldridge caused one fumble and recovered one fumble for a touchdown. Josh Mills had two tackles and one assisted tackle, and Nathan Moose had two tackles and three assisted tackles.
“At one point we were down by two touchdowns, but the team continued to play hard and battled back to win the game despite the fact that Evangel had twice as much depth,” said Travis Creasy, RCA’s offensive coordinator. “They did not get discouraged and played as one unit, which made the difference for us.”
The Knights will play at home on Friday night against Aaron Academy for the last regular season game, with kickoff at 7 p.m.
