Child Find is a component of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act that requires states to identify, locate and evaluate all children with disabilities who are in need of special education services.
This process assists in locating students suspected of having disabilities, between the ages of three and 21, who would benefit from services.
This includes locating students who are not in school, those in school, but not receiving special education services, and those who are receiving some, but not all, needed special education services.
The process for identifying a student are as follows: a review or screening of available information about the child; when screening indicates the possibility of an educational disability, the child is evaluated in relevant areas; or when results indicate that a child is disabled and in need of special education services, an individualized plan is developed.
Federal and state laws identify specific disabling conditions that entitle a child to special education service if it is determined that the disability is interfering with the child’s learning.
Children grow and develop at different rates. A problem in one or two skill areas may not be serious, but it is important to be certain. The sooner the delay in development is discovered, the sooner help can be offered.
If there are concerns about your child’s development, free evaluations and/or screenings are available. These assessments include motor skills, vision skills, hearing skills, self-help skills, knowledge/concepts, speech/language, social or behavior.
