The Third Imagination Library 5K Run and 1 Mile Fun Walk will be on Saturday, Sept. 22, announced Dr. Helen Fussell, a member of the IL board here and race organizer.
The race is scheduled to highlight Imagination Library Week. Racers and walkers will gather at the Stone Bridge Park Visitor Center at 8 a.m.
“The race will be through historic Mulberry Avenue and conclude in the Stone Bridge Park for awards and recognition of race winners and teams that are participating,” said Teresa Brown, president of the Imagination Library of Lincoln County. “There will be drawings for door prizes at the conclusion of the race.”
Race participants will be able to register at the Imagination Library Facebook page, Active.com, Bank of Lincoln County, and US Bank.
“Although Imagination Library and Friends of the Library share a common goal, they are not the same 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization,” said Mrs. Brown. “The Imagination Library of Lincoln County provides a free, age-appropriate book to all registered children from birth to age 5.
“Upon graduation from the program, a child has their own personal library of 60 books to enjoy reading on their own,” she continued. “Currently there are 1,307 children in Lincoln County receiving their free book each month.”
The mission of the Imagination Library is that all children have books in the home starting at birth. The ultimate goal is that this program will improve literacy rates and result in a more educated workforce in Lincoln County and the state of Tennessee.
This race has been a major fundraiser for the Imagination Library in paying for the books, said Mrs. Brown, noting that the Lincoln County affiliate pays $15 per child for a book each month in cooperation with the Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation. The program is administered by the Dollywood Foundation. Dolly Parton only pays for the books for the children in her hometown of Sevierville.
To enroll a child in the program, forms are located at the public library, the Health Department, and US Bank. The option of enrolling online is available.
