Frontier Days this weekend

With the high gas prices and a struggling economy, many families may be in a dilemma as to how to provide summer fun for the family at an affordable price. 

Lynchburg’s Frontier Days may be just the solution they need. This year marks the event’s 50th anniversary.

Frontier Days will be held Thursday, June 21, from 5 until 10 p.m., Friday, June 22, at 5 and 11 p.m.; and Saturday, June 23, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Admission to the event is free. There is a nominal charge for the carnival rides, petting zoo, buggy rides and the mechanical bull.  A Carnival Ride Armband Night will be available on Thursday from 5 until 10 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. There is a charge for the rodeo.

A highlight of the festival is always the parade. This year, Frontier Day Queens from the past 50 years have been invited to ride together in the parade. Line-up takes place at Lynchburg Elementary School at 11 a.m. Saturday for the judging of Frontier Costumes and Rigs. Cash prizes will be awarded.  Ramble the Raccoon, the Tennessee State Park mascot, will be the grand marshal of the parade. Between 12:45 and 1:15 p.m., Ramble will “meet and greet” and get his picture made with children in the Diamond Gusset store on the square.

Throughout the day on Saturday, take a break from the heat and admire the Moore County Cultural Arts Exhibits at the Moore County Library from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.  At the Iron Kettle, beginning at 10 a.m., author Jill Rael will sign copies of her new book, “Around Lynchburg.”

Following the parade at 12 noon, gather at the Farmer’s Bank stage and learn the winner of the third annual “Heart of Gold” Citizenship Award. The Chamber of Commerce Auction will follow this presentation. Eric Fruehauf of Coffee County Realty will be the auctioneer.  

Saturday, there will be cloggers on the square — Heaven Bound Cloggers from 1 to 1:45 p.m. and Mid-State Cloggers from 6 to 6:45 p.m.  The “River Chase Posse” will be in town on Saturday to keep law and order. Don’t miss the western reenactment on the square at 11:45 a.m. and 3 p.m.

A variety of contests will be held throughout the day Saturday: Baby Contest at the Farmers Bank Stage at 9 a.m., Homemade Apple Pie and Cornbread Contest at the Gazebo from 10:30 to 11 a.m., Watermelon Eating Contest for 12 and up at the Gazebo from 1:30 to 2 p.m. and Dog and Cutest Goat Contest at the Gazebo from 3:20 to 4 p.m.

Stan McNabb Automotive is sponsoring a PCA 8 Event Rodeo on Friday and Saturday from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in Wiseman Park.  Also on Friday and Saturday from 7:30 to 11 p.m., Vintage Country will provide music for street dancing at the Farmer’s Bank Stage.  Bring a chair and enjoy the music and the fireworks on Saturday night following the rodeo.
