Now that school is back in session, we at the library enter a new mode. After a great summer reading wrap-up we are now looking at our future schedule and making new plans. We had the first introductory meeting of our new Readers & Writers Book Club/Discussion Group on Aug. 14 where members decided to meet monthly on the last Thursday at 5:30 p.m. to discuss a wide array of books. First book on the list is local author Betty Bolte’s Traces, and each member moving forward will be responsible for picking a book and leading discussion. Stay tuned for more details and feel free to come to the next meeting.

Our next speaker in our lecture series will be Kelly Fisk Hamlin, a recent graduate of UAH’s graduate program in history. Kelly will be discussing the Civil Rights Movement in Huntsville, Ala., which was the topic of her thesis. She will have wonderful images to exhibit with her talk. We will begin as always at 6 p.m. in the Genealogy Room.

September’s speaker with be Myers Brown, who will take us on an insider’s tour of our newest exhibit Hoof Beats in the Heartland. This exhibit, on loan from the Tennessee State Museum and sponsored by the Tennessee Humanities Foundation, will open on Sept. 24, with Myers on hand Sept. 30. This will wrap up our series for this year, so come out and join us for wonderful evenings filled with history!

Our newest round of adult computer classes has begun, with our next session being held on Aug. 23 with instruction on resume writing. Class will begin at 11 a.m. and sign-up is required, as space is limited. Please call the library to hold your place. These free classes are open to everyone.

Beginning Sept. 1, our schedule is changing to offer another chance for evening events and to allow time after work and school for library use. We will now be open until 8 p.m. on both Tuesday and Thursday nights and will continue to open at 9 a.m. Monday-Saturday. However, we will be closing at 5 p.m. on Fridays and 4 p.m. on Saturdays. New hours will be posted to remind our customers of this change.

We love to see you at the library, so come over to 306 Elk Ave North and check out a book, use the Wi-Fi, download some books, or just enjoy the comfort of the library environment, and learn local!
