The weather may be heating up, but we are staying extra cool at the library with all our fun summer activities.
June 28th was our wrap-up party for kids’ Summer Reading, and we had tons of fun in the planetarium provided by Sci-Quest, awarded great prizes to those who completed the program and enjoyed some great food. Next up it will be the teens’ turn!
Registration deadline for kids 10 and up is July 5, and we will not have any Summer Reading events the week of Independence Day. The following week we will have a local Robotics team on Thursday at 1 p.m. We will also have movies at 6 p.m. every Tuesday night beginning July 8. Those that complete the reading requirements will be eligible to win some pretty fantastic prizes.
Our hands-on activities for teens and tweens will include Survival Skills hosted by the Boy Scouts, the Science of Photography with UAH professor Jose Betancourt (we will develop images in the sun using a chemical process), a program about Magnets hosted by CSPAR out of Huntsville, Forensics and Grossology, a more advanced Planetarium show brought to you by Sci-Quest.
Kids are not required to sign up for the full reading program in order to attend our special events, but these activities are designed for older kids, so younger siblings may have difficulty keeping up. But, our play area will remain a fixture in the library for the foreseeable future!
Our Speaker Series is well under way. In July we will have two speakers, both from the University of Alabama in Huntsville’s History Department. Dr. Molly Johnson will host a talk on women’s activities during World War I on July 22. Dr. Stephen Waring will discuss Huntsville’s connection to Space Exploration on July 29, and both talks will begin at 6 p.m. We have had some really great talks so far, and the tradition will continue with both of these scholars.
We would like to send a big thank you out to Mr. David Dale, long-time Motlow history professor, for filling in for our June speaker on such short notice. His talk about the origins of this country was thought provoking!
We have something for everyone all summer long at the library; we hope to see you soon!
