Falcons go 2-1 in district baseball tourney

Lincoln County High School’s Falcon baseball team went 2-1 district tournament action last week.

The Falcons opened with a win on the road over Lawrence County, but the team was then defeated by no. 1 seed Tullahoma Wildcats in their second game. The Falcons came back with a win over Franklin County. Tullahoma is the host school for the tournament.

Saturday the Falcons won 11-7 over the Rebels. The lead would change five times against Franklin County. The Falcons’ big inning came in the fourth on a two-run double by Carson Taylor.

Franklin County opened with three runs in the first, but the Falcons answered with two in the bottom half of the inning, then added two in the second, four in the third, two in the fourth and one in the sixth. The Rebels plated two more runs in the third and two in the seventh.

The Falcons finished with 11 hits. Jacob Dickenson had a big night, going 3-4 with 3 singles; Carson Taylor singled and doubled; Brandon Gower and Jake Pierce each had 2 singles; and Logan Smith and Zack Malone each singled.

Zack Malone got the win, going three innings and giving up five runs (three earned) off six hits, three walks and three strikeouts. Keller Monks went four innings, giving up two earned runs off four hits, one walk and three strikeouts. The Falcon recorded one error.

Friday the Falcons went down to Tullahoma, 6-0. Three of the runs for the Wildcats were earned. The Cats scored two in the second, one in the third and three in the sixth. The Falcons had one hit against Justus Sheffield on a single by Grady Wright. Sheffield finished with 14 strikeouts.

Chandler Hardiman took the loss, going one and a third innings giving up two runs (one earned) off two hits and two walks. Keller Monks went one and two third innings, giving up one earned run off two hits and one strikeout. Nick Gatlin went two thirds of an inning, giving up one unearned run off a walk; Jake Pierce with two and a third innings, giving up two runs (one earned) off three hits and two strikeouts. The Falcons were charged with three errors.

Thursday Lincoln County won 2-1 in a nine-inning battle over Lawrence County. After five innings of scoreless baseball, the Falcons put a run on the board in the top of the sixth. Logan Smith reached on a walk. Brandon Gower grounded out but advanced Smith to second. Grady Wright got an RBI double to left field, scoring Smith. But the Wildcats put an unearned run on the board in the bottom of the inning, knotting the game at 1-1. In the top of the ninth, Chandler Hardiman reached on a single to right field. Tyler McCown advanced Hardiman to third, reaching on an error. Cameron McCoy got what would be the game-winning RBI, scoring Hardiman on a single and putting the Falcons up 2-1.

Carson Taylor set down the final three Wildcat batters – the third on a “strike three looking”. Taylor had a stellar night, going all nine innings giving up one unearned run off four hits, one walk and seven strikeouts with a pitch count of 103. Lincoln County had one error in the nine innings.

For their next action, the Falcons were to play Coffee County on Monday night at Tullahoma.
