Motlow urges ‘unplug, read’

The McMinn-ville Center library was one of three Motlow campuses that participated in the “Unplug and Read” event recently. Prizes were donated by area businesses and drawings were held to award prizes.
Motlow College libraries on the Moore County campus and at the McMinnville and Smyrna centers recently helped sponsor the “Unplug and Read,” event, which encouraged Motlow students, faculty and staff to read books and magazines in lieu of using electronic devices.
Read to Succeed, a Rutherford County organization that raises literacy awareness, sponsored the event.
“This can be quite a challenge for most people who seem to be plugged into assorted devices during the majority of their waking hours,” said Paige Hendrickson, the branch librarian at the Smyrna campus.
Each reading session earned the participant an entry for the prize drawings held at the event’s conclusion. The prizes were donated by several local businesses, including Barnes & Noble Booksellers, Chick-Fil-A, Office Max, La Siesta, Zaxby’s, Krispy Kreme, PetSmart, Celtic Cup, Toot’s, Las Trojas, Gil’s Ace Hardware, Whiskey Runners Cafe, Jim ‘N Nick’s Bar-B-Q and the Smyrna Bowling Center.
According to Hendrickson, there were 203 total entries, 73 individual participants, 220 titles read, and the cumulative reading time totaled 62 hours.
