John Thorpe has officially announced he is seeking re-election to the Lincoln County Commission for District 2 in the Aug. 7 elections.

A native Lincoln Countian, he is the son of Janice Thorpe (Davis) and the late James Thorpe. He and his wife, Andrea Askins Thorpe, have two children, Claire and Jonathan James (J.J.) Thorpe

Thorpe has lived most of his life in the McBurg/Dellrose community. He and his wife currently live in the Fairview/Boonshill community on Highway 64. They are members of McBurg First Baptist Church.

Thorpe is an auctioneer and real estate agent working with Van Massey Auction and Realty in Fayetteville. He has been awarded several professional designations by the National Auctioneers Association (NAA), including Certified Estate Specialist (CES) and Benefit Auctioneer Specialist (BAS), during his career.

He has served on many committees in his four years of being a commissioner. He is currently on the Agriculture Committee where he serves as chairman. In addition, he also serves on the Road Committee, Fire/EMA Committee, Beer Board, Ad Hoc Sewer Study Committee, and many others as well.

Over the past four years, Thorpe and other District 2 commissioners have had approximately 12 town hall meetings in the 2nd district.

“It’s important to have these meetings and get concerns and comments from the citizens in order to do our job correctly,” said Thorpe. “I have always been an advocate of smaller, transparent government. I think the citizens should know what is going on in their government and where their money is being spent, and we should listen to their input on how they want their money to be spent or how they don’t want it to be spent.

“Being your commissioner has been a humbling experience for me, and I really appreciate everyone, who has supported me, and I also appreciate everyone who has attended our town hall meetings and have called and expressed your concerns over the past over,” he added. “I would appreciate your support and your vote for commissioner in District 2 again. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please do not hesitate to call me anytime.”

Thorpe can be reached at (931) 433-0179 or on his cell phone at (931) 993-6157.
