Years ago Jennie Roles-Walter and Linda Dorris formed a great friendship at her art studio. Linda needed an outlet to deal with her son being sent overseas for war and art was just the right medicine. Over many a painted canvas came several conversations about how wonderful it would be to collaborate on a book together.

Years went by with nothing sparking their interest until they both observed and agreed that there was a general lack of local history knowledge with their students. A conversation formed into an idea, which led to a sketch, to research, and finally, a wonderful children’s book was born!

“L.J.’s Magic Gadget Travels to Lincoln County” is a book about an 8-year-old boy assigned a history report about his hometown that he isn’t too happy about. L.J. travels back in time to different locations in Lincoln County learning about key “local” historical locations such as Camp Blount, the courthouse, Wells Hill Park, and other pivotal sites. This book was written for second and third students and includes supplemental instructional information as well as wonderful art activities for teachers and parents.

Linda is a reading teacher and Jennie is an art teacher, both at Fayetteville High School with a combined 33 years of experience in public education.

You may pick your book up at Jennie and Linda’s first formal book reading and signing at The Art Teacher’s Studio, 111 North Main Ave in Fayetteville, on Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. and enjoy a snack and drink while you are there. Only 150 copies of this book will be printed.
