LCHS eyes Deep Space Habitat

Through recent years, students in Lincoln County High School’s CTE CAD program have created components used in training astronauts for the Space Shuttle. With the closing of that program, the group continues to manufacture parts used in training for the International Space Station.

But, there is a new project on the horizon for the students at LCHS.

“Lincoln County High School is the first of all the HUNCH (High School Students United with NASA to Create Hardware) high schools to learn about and asked to be a part of a newly-released design project for NASA,” said CTE CAD instructor Mark Helton.”

“Through the HUNCH program we will be engaged in the design of ergonomically friendly release and payload mounting devices,” continued Helton. “These designs will be for a new project of the DSH (Deep Space Habitat) subsystem pallets which will house many of the life support and experimentation components of the DSH, which is similar to the old Sky Lab project. But, this habitat will be attached to a spacecraft that will be traveling to Mars.

“Because of its location, a Deep Space Habitat will be days, if not months, from Earth’s re-supply or emergency return,” Helton continued. “This means that subsystems must be designed for servicing – rack packaged subsystems and utilities are difficult to access and maintain – that is our involvement with the project.”

Helton added, “This is truly some exciting stuff for our students to be a part of and be able to put on their resumes and add to their portfolios.”
