Flintville School kids became the second group of students to be recipients of Hands of Mercy’s Weekend Feeding Program.
Tina Hudson, Hands of Mercy president, along with Kem Barnes with First Baptist’s Leading Ladies to Christ ministry, delivered 50 “Bags of Blessings” to the school Thursday morning.
Ralph Askins School students were the first group of children to benefit from the program last fall. Each week 40 “BoBs” – Bags of Blessings – are delivered to Askins School, and 50 BoBs will be delivered to Flintville School.
“Our goal is to have 50 at each county school,” said Hudson.
School counselors determine which kids need the supplementary weekend food.
“This is one-fifth of my goal,” Hudson explained.
About 22.5 percent of kids in Lincoln County are food insecure — both in the city and county. Each Bag of Blessings includes items like two pop-top meals, a fruit box drink, raisins, pop tarts, cereal, two containers of white milk, one container of chocolate milk, apple sauce, Jell-O or pudding cups, along with extra cheese or peanut butter and crackers.
First United Methodist Church provides volunteers to deliver meals to Askins School.
Before children receive the food, parents must give their permission and let Hands of Mercy know if the child has any allergies.
More sponsors are needed to help support the cost of feeding the children. Hudson says it costs $160 per year to sponsor one child. More churches or organizations are needed to provide volunteers to deliver the meals, as well.
