“Christmas for the Soldiers,” an effort to send 5,000 cards, letters and children’s drawings to troops who couldn’t home this holiday season, far exceeded expectations.

“I wanted to let everyone in Lincoln County know what a great job they did raising cards for ‘Christmas for the Soldiers’,” said Ashley Sand, who spearheads the effort in memory of her soldier lost and in keeping a promise to him to always support his brothers and sisters in arms.

“Our total was 8,446 cards and 15 boxes of candies and food for our troops.”

According to Sand, one soldier replied in a letter, “I don’t know how you did it but you are better than the USO.” Another letter read, “All my soldiers are on their first deployment, except myself and two others, and they were so happy with all the cards and letters and support.”

“Lincoln County is a huge part of the reason Tennessee is called the volunteer state,” Sand said, thanking those locally who helped support the effort. “They held true in helping make Christmas bright for so many. Almost every church contributed, as well as so many ladies’ groups and schools.

“There is no way to thank every individual one, but you all blessed us so much with your outpouring of love for the troops.”

Now that Christmas has passed, Sand is focusing on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14.

“We are now undertaking Valentines for them,” she said. “It is called ‘We love our troops’. If anyone is willing to get involved, please contact me at 931-639-9574. If you have a deployed soldier, contact me with a name, and I will make sure they get included. We are also selling shirts to fund the project. If anyone wants one, they can contact me also.”
