It’s time for the annual Can-A-Thon food drive to support Provision Port here in Fayetteville.
Can-A-Thon is a Tennessee Valley wide food drive sponsored by Channel 48 in support of area food banks. Thursday, Dec. 5, volunteers will be in Fayetteville’s Walmart parking lot from 4:30 a.m. until 6 p.m., collecting food items and tax-deductible cash donations from the public to support the local food bank.
“Provision Port is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to helping feed those in need on a local level,” said Danny Pigg, who assists with the drive. “Tons of food is distributed each year to help families in and around the Fayetteville/Lincoln County area. Families are helped through regularly scheduled distributions as well as on an ‘as needed’ basis.”
Provision Port receives no government assistance. All food distributed is generated through cash donations and food drives from the community. Each year at this time schools and churches collect food items for bulk donations, and the general public donates the day of the Can-A-Thon by stopping by the collection site and dropping off cash or food items during day of the event.
“All cash donations are tax deductible and goes toward purchasing food items needed that hasn’t been donated,” Pigg continued, adding, “All members of Provision Port are volunteers and do not receive salaries.
“We encourage you to take part in this event by stopping by our collection site Thursday, Dec 5, between 4:30 am and 6 p.m.,” he said. “Drop off your food items and get information on how your group can be take part in helping feed those in need in our community.”
