Upward offers something for whole family

In a time where families are pulled in a million different directions, Fayetteville First United Methodist Church is bringing families and the community together.

1paperUpward Sports, the world’s largest Christian sports league for children, attracts more than 550,000 kids each year with its unique approach – teaching skills for the sports arena and values for life.

To avoid player and parent burnout, Upward Sports Leagues limit the time commitment to one practice and one game per week. Upward Sports Leagues are approximately 10-week programs that incorporate character-building principles into the sports experience.

“As a volunteer, you do not have to be athletic – or even a sports enthusiast – Upward Sports has a spot for the whole family.” said Brenda Smith, league director at Fayetteville First United Methodist Church.

Please note that all volunteers are required to submit to a background check as a part of the church’s Safe Sanctuary policy.

Registration will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 5, and Thursday, Nov. 7, from 5:30 until 8 p.m. Basketball players will need to be evaluated, and all players and cheerleaders will try on uniforms so that theirs can be ordered. Fees include uniforms, supplies, pompoms & megaphones for cheerleaders and other team supplies.

All games are free. A concession stand is open each week to help raise money for scholarships. Donations are always accepted and appreciated. Scholarship applications are available through the church office. The amounts awarded are based on need and the amount of money available.

This year, registration is available online at https://registration.upward.org/UPW53514. You can pay online with a debit/credit card or in person with a check or cash. The deadline for registration is Nov. 7. Practices start in December, and the games will be every Saturday morning in January and February.

Fayetteville First has hosted Upward Sports Leagues, including basketball and cheerleading, for almost a decade, coaching and mentoring close to 1,000 Fayetteville-area kids.
