The First Annual Smokin’ at Stone Bridge BBQ Cook Off got underway Friday with the aroma from smokers filling the air.
The event was partnered with the Tennessee BBQ Association and the Fayetteville Department of Recreation.
Dedicated grillers with strong cooking backgrounds from around the area took part in the competition looking to see who prepared the best chicken, ribs and ribeye steaks. The finished products were judged on appearance, taste and tenderness.
“We very much appreciate the City of Fayetteville for letting us come in and be a part of this event,” said Tennessee BBQ co-founder and pitmaster, James Brawner from Springville. “This park is a beautiful setting for a cooking competition. It’s the first event we’ve sponsored in Middle Tennessee, and I’m proud it took place in Fayetteville, and we look forward to it being an annual event.
“Everyone locally involved with his event, as well as the contestants, have been a pleasure to work with,” he added. “Without the local support, this would not be possible. We’re proud to bring competition with reasonably priced entry fees, good cash prizes and a consistent scoring system for everyone.
“We had some quality food prepared here today and want to see it grow to a great event for this community. The top five teams here today have all now qualified for the TBA State Championship”
In the overall competition with a possible 648 points, “General BBQ” with Dustin Spivey and Randy Bafford with 632.64 took the championship. Second place went to “2 Live Cue” with 629.96; third place, “Dirty South BBQ” with 628.26; fourth place, “Game Cock and Duroc” with 627.60; and fifth place with to “Smokin’ Squires” with 626.64.
