Founded in 1986, the Governor’s School for International Studies (GSIS) is a four-week residential program that is available to rising high school juniors and seniors throughout Tennessee, and is one of twelve such programs funded by the Tennessee Department of Education.
The admissions process for GSIS is quite competitive, as the 66 attendees were drawn from a pool of over 400 applicants.
In this program, students are immersed in global issues, languages and cultures. In addition to completing university coursework in International Relations, Cultural Geography and Political Science, Constance received training in Arabic. She also participated in numerous experiential activities, such as Model UN, and met with current and former employees from such organizations as the State Department, the Peace Corps, the CIA and the FBI.
To develop an understanding for how local organizations work to respond to global challenges, Constance also completed a service-learning project with a Memphis nonprofit organization.
