The 2013 Fayetteville Country Club Derby will be played this Saturday, Sept. 28.
While the Fayetteville Golf & Country Club’s 2013 Annual Rick Whitmore Calcutta Golf Tournament was held June 29 and July 4, the tournament was called after completion of the first day’s play after all of the rain that fell on July 4.
First place went to the two-man team of Doug Morrow and Lee Gray. Second place was awarded to Charles Caldwell and Owen Bagley. And coming in third in this year’s tournament was Bill Johnson and Jared Parsons.
Normally, there is a 10-man elimination Derby round played on hole number one and continuing to an exciting finish on hole number nine immediately after the second day of the tournament, always held on the Fourth of July. Due to the rain this year, though, the Derby was postponed until Sept. 28.
At every hole one man is eliminated, determined by the worst score of the hole. If there is a tie for the worst score, then a chip off determines who is eliminated. The participants in each year’s derby are determined by the 10 best players’ scores turned in after the first day of play in the Annual Rick Whitmore Tournament.
This year’s Derby players are Lee Gray, Jared Parsons, Owen Bagley, Doug Morrow, Donnie Turpen, David Bagley, Adam Bagley, Steve McWhirter, Jim Middleton and Chris Harper.
“The Fayetteville Golf & Country Club would like to invite everyone out to watch this extremely entertaining and exciting Derby Elimination Match,” said Rossy Williams, adding that the match will start at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28. “All of the club’s facilities will be available for everyone to enjoy.
“Everyone is encouraged to watch very good golfers participate in a pressure-packed elimination round to determine which two golfers will come down the ninth fairway in an effort to determine 2013’s Derby Champion.”
In case of rain, the Derby will be played on Sunday, Sept. 29.
