Host families sought for exchange

Host families for foreign exchange students are currently being sought.

None have private school money. Those interested should contact Jim Powers, local coordinator, Council on International Educational Exchange, at 256-653-1066 or email jim.powers53@yahoo.com.

“I am currently looking for caring families in Madison County, Ala., and surrounding counties to host a high school exchange student from another country for the upcoming school year,” said Powers.

CIEE host families accept a student into their home as a “son or daughter” for one or two semesters. They provide a bed and room (students can share a room with a host sibling of the same gender within four years age difference) and a place to study. They share three meals a day or if the student chooses to purchase school lunches, it is their responsibility.

Host families receive local and regional support 24/7 for any needs and there is also a 24-hour emergency hotline. The host family may claim $50 deduction on their federal income taxes.

CIEE students are ages 15-18 (grades 10-12); come from 55 different countries, have been thoroughly screened, speak English, have their own spending money and have health insurance.

For more information about becoming a host family, go to http://www.ciee.org/highschool/host-families/benefits.html. There will be an online application here, which is the first step in the approval process.
