Reward offered for tips in grate thefts
Lincoln County Area Crime Stoppers is offering a reward for tips leading to the arrest and conviction of thieves who have been stealing cast iron storm grates that cover the storm drains located in the city.
Over the past two weeks, Fayetteville Police have had reports of the grates being stolen in at least eight areas of the city.
Detective Adam Eubanks stated that someone took a grate from an area on Houston Street Thursday morning during the daylight. Grates have also been stolen from Nelson Street, East Edison Street, Northview, East Campbell and West Campbell, South Bellview, two from the Lincoln County High School parking lot and one from Fayetteville High School.
“Anyone with information may be eligible for a reward,” said Eubanks.
Some of the grates stolen have been in alleys and parking lots and others to the side near the curb. The danger is that someone driving down the street or parking a vehicle could end up with a wheel in one of the holes, causing an accident, or someone walking could fall into one.
Fayetteville Streets Superintendent Mike Parker on Thursday afternoon agreed that it was not only dangerous, but it costs taxpayers money, since the price of the grates ranges from $120 to $175 each. He said the grates range from 18 x 18-inches to 30-inches in diameter.
“Two to three of the big ones are gone,” he noted.
Anyone with information is asked to call Lincoln County Area Crime Stoppers at 433-STOP. You can remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrests and convictions of those involved.
