Winsett, former Petersburg mayor, dies
Wayne Darnell Winsett of Petersburg, former mayor of Petersburg and local business owner, died Thursday (June 6, 2013) at his residence. He was 82.
Mr. Winsett was a native of Lincoln County and the son of the late T. B. Winsett and Leona Lynn Land Winsett.
He served as mayor of Petersburg, former owner of Lincoln Service Station, was a rural mail carrier for United States Postal Service out of Petersburg and served as funeral assistant for Bills-McGaugh Funeral Home for over ten years. He was a member of Cane Creek Church of Christ.
Mr. Winsett was preceded in death by his wife, Chris Warren Winsett, who passed away in 1985; four brothers, Marlan Winsett, Darwin Winsett, Arnold Winsett and Buford Winsett; and one half-brother, Gary Winsett.
He is survived by three daughters, Linda (William) Ellis of Fayetteville, Nancy (Kenneth) Richardson of Petersburg and Lois (Wayne) McNeese of Lewisburg; three sons, Ray Winsett of Farmington, Kenny Winsett of Lynchburg and Billy Wayne (Gwen) Winsett of Petersburg; two sisters, Ruth Hastings of Petersburg and Lynn Wiser of Fayetteville; one half-sister, Debbie Crabtree; and two half-brothers, Dale and Terry Winsett. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, sixteen step-great-grandchildren, six step-great-great-grandchildren; his caregiver, Jackie Wells; and his special little dog, Sissy.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the chapel of Bills-McGaugh Funeral Home with burial in Old Orchard Cemetery in Petersburg.
