The SAAW Clinic (Southern Alliance of Animal Welfare) opening has been anticipated for several years, but three weeks ago, that dream became a reality.
As of this past Tuesday, the first two weeks of operation, the clinic had already performed 48 spays or neuters on dogs and cats. At the helm is Dr. Angie Hawkins, in charge of surgeries, assisted by Pamela Dodson, licensed veterinary technician, and Kelly Perry, veterinary assistant.
Bonnie Cowan, animal advocate for SAAW/Lincoln County stated that the clinic not only spays/neuters dogs and cats, but also kittens and puppies.
“We do juvenile spay and neuter,” she explained, noting that the animal can be as small as two pounds. “Income is not a factor, but we do offer assistance for low income people.”
It costs $30 to have a cat neutered; a cat spay is $40; dog neuter, $45; dog spay, $55; feral cat spay or neuter $25. The price includes a rabies vaccine. While the pet is in the clinic, clients have the option to have their pet vaccinated or tested for heartworm or feline diseases for $10 to $18.
SAAW, a non-profit organization, is dedicated to saving the lives of dogs and cats by reducing overpopulation. Their mission is to reduce the euthanasia of healthy, adoptable dogs and cats by making high-quality, high-volume, low-cost spay/neuter services available to all residents of Lincoln and surrounding counties.
SAAW is always looking for volunteers for fundraising, grant writing and for other tasks. The organization depends entirely on fundraisers, grants and donations from compassionate individuals and businesses.
Through “Operation Catnip”, a trap/neuter/return project, SAAW has greatly reduced the number of feral cats in the community. The organization also offers education on pet care, spay/neuter programs and food assistance to qualifying pet owners.
The new clinic, located at 2703 Huntsville Highway near Prospect Road, is open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Cowan advises to call 2 to 3 weeks in advance for an appointment. The phone number is 433-0120.
