BPA dancers earn high honors
Backstage Performing Arts Dancers
Backstage Performing Arts recently attended two dance conventions presented by Dance Masters of America Chapter #41 in Chattanooga and Rising Start Talent Productions in Huntsville, Ala.
After practicing several weekends the students’ hard work and discipline paid off as they were recognized and received several awards at the competitions.
Backstage Performing Arts Company included Senior, Junior 1, Junior 2 and Mini groups. The Senior company members are Amelia Cash, Reagan Mitchell, and Alana Rutledge. The Junior 1 company members are Julia Cox, Emma Fraley, Rachel Hill, Hannah Howell, Libby Quick, Maria Self and Abigail Sink. The Junior 2 company includes Allie Groce, Ashlee Jean, Brylea Pruett and Gracie Schutt. The Mini company includes Madison Ferguson, Krystal Gioia, Abby Mole, Brianna Tate and Ava Watson.
Choreographers for the BPA Company are Jordan Allen and Melvie Myrick, owner.
At Dance Masters of America, the Mini company group received a High Silver award for their tap dance, “Looney Tunes”, choreographed by Melvie Myrick, and a High Gold award for their jazz number, “Single Ladies”, choreographed by Jordan Allen. The Junior 2 company received a Gold for their jazz dance “Doctor, Doctor”, and a High Gold for their tap dance “Beat It”, both choreographed by Jordan Allen.
The Junior 1 company received a Gold for their jazz dance “Sparkling Diamonds”, choreographed by Jordan Allen, and a High Gold for their tap dance “Coffee in a Cardboard Cup”, choreographed by Melvie Myrick. They also received 1st Overall 12 and under small groups and competed in the Grand Champion competition.
The Senior company received a Gold for the lyrical number “One and Only”, and a High Silver for their jazz dance “History Repeating”, both choreographed by Jordan Allen. Reagan Mitchell Performed a solo to “Trust a Try”, and received a Gold award. Alana Rutledge performed a solo to “Roxie”, also receiving a Gold award. Both solos were choreographed by Jordan Allen.
Libby Quick and Rachel Hill competed a duet, “Mission Impossible”, which earned them a High Silver. It was choreographed by Jordan Allen. The duo “Bandstand Boogie”, performed by Hannah Howell and Abigail Sink, earned a Gold award. It was choreographed by Melvie Myrick.
In addition to the competition, the dancers took classes from master teachers in ballet, tap and jazz. The BPA company group members were commended for their energy and hard work throughout the master classes.
In addition to the Performing Arts Competition, former BPA company member Shelby Thrasher relinquished her title of Miss Dance Master of America Chapter 41. She performed a farewell solo to “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”. She then gave her farewell speech before awarding the new title winner.
At Rising Star, company members competed with the same dances and won many awards. The Mini company received a Gold award for “Single Ladies” and a Gold award for “Looney Tunes”. They also received third place in the 9-10 year old tap division. Junior 2 company received a Gold award for “Doctor, Doctor” and for “Beat It”. They won third place in the 9-10 jazz division and second place in the 9-10 tap division.
Junior 2 company received a Gold award for “Sparkling Diamonds” and for “Coffee In a Cardboard Cup”. They received first place in the 9-10 jazz and tap division. Senior company earned a Gold award for “History Repeating” and “One and Only”, and they received first place in the 15-16 lyrical and jazz divisions. “One and Only” also received second Overall in the Senior Duo/Trio division, and “History Repeating” received first Overall in the Senior Duo/Trio division.
Libby Quick and Rachel Hill performed their duo “Mission Impossible” and received a Gold award, first place in the 9-10 jazz division, and second Overall in the Junior Duo/Trio division. Abigail Sink and Hannah Howell earned a Gold award, first place in the 11-12 tap division and first Overall in the Junior Duo/Trio division for their duo “Bandstand Boogie.”
Alana Rutledge performed her solo “Roxie” and received a Gold award, first place in the 17-19 musical theater division and second Overall for the Senior Solos. Reagan Mitchell received a Gold award, first place in the 13-14 open division, and second Overall for the Teen Solos with her number “Trust A Try.”
Students from Backstage Performing Arts can be seen dancing throughout the community at different events. Recently they performed “The Nutcracker of Lincoln County”, The Host of Christmas Past and Breakfast with Santa. A few students and teachers performed in the “Fabulous Fifties Show”.
