Letter from Birmingham Jail
The Rev. Craig Carmichael of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and Stenson Knott, another local minister, share the honors Tuesday of reading Dr. Martin Luther King’s Letter from the Birmingham Jail at the Fayetteville/Lincoln County Public Library.
The reading was part of a worldwide celebration organized by the Birmingham Public Library in recognition of the 50th anniversary of King beginning to write the historic letter. King had been imprisoned as a participant in nonviolent demonstrations against segregation and wrote the letter in response to public concern and caution issued by religious leaders of the day.
