LCHS Robotics Team gets to Smoky quarterfinals

Robotics Team CompetesThe Lincoln County High School Robotics Team placed 14th in the FIRST Smoky Mountain Regional Competition in Knoxville, participating in the quarterfinals on March 28-30.

The students, with the support of teachers Alyssa Simmons, Charles Hughes Marty LeBlanc and mentors Nick Norris, Mike Smith and Steven Cash, had met intensely since the first of January in order to design, build and program the robot to the students’ specifications. The tasks the robot was to perform this year were to shoot frisbees into goals at various heights and climb an open-framed tower. The team’s robot was able to score points with Frisbees and by climbing the tower. The robot also played defense to allow other teammates to score.

The LCHS team was eliminated from the quarterfinals by the team that would go on to win the regional.

Along with having fun, the students learned problem solving, teamwork, computer programming, applied math and physics and engineering.

The LCHS Robotics Team is sponsored by Boeing, Booz Allen Hamilton, AUVSI and HATS Stedtrain. The students on the team are Bradley McGee, Jessica Pearson, Shauri Smith, Kaitlin Payne, Amelia Cash, Kaelee Matthews, Abby Graham, Katie Clark, Justice Wheat, Travis Smith, Dylan McCool, Jonas Cash, James Clayton, Ty Quick, Alex Graham, Logan Shelton, Jordan Smith, Constance Hawley and Kayla Chandler.
