April is Civitan Awareness Month.
What is Civitan? The local Highland Rim Civitan Club is part of Civitan International. It is a group of civic-minded people who organize fundraises, help out in the community and place candy boxes in local restaurants or businesses to help the UAB Civitan International Research Center in Birmingham, Ala. The Research Center helps those challenged by developmental disabilities.
Through interdisciplinary research, clinical services and community programs, the UAB Civitan Research Center improves the lives of people at risk for or affected by developmental disabilities. The Center conducts research on development of central nervous system, with special emphasis on developmental disabilities.
On the local level, the Civitan Club volunteers in the community, whether it is to help move books from the old to the new library or make donations to Junior’s House, the Child Development Center, the Sheriff’s Department Project Lifesaver, the Senior Citizen Center or scholarships for high school seniors.
Additional donations are made to the local Animal Shelter, Wings of Love, a local charity that helps women in crisis situations, and other organizations in the area that distribute food to those in need.
Civitans also assist with the local and area Special Olympics. You may find members on the field helping the Olympians get ready for competition, providing food for the Special Olympics Banquet or donating money to help with expenses.
Local members say being a part of Highland Rim Civitan and Civitan International gives them satisfaction in helping the community and the UAB International Research Center.
If you would like to volunteer in the community, email Pat Cross at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 433-1591. You can also check out the club on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at 6:30 p.m. at Mildred’s in Park City. Visit the Civitan International website at www.civitan.org.
