TTC’s truck driving program expands
The Tennessee Technology Center at Shelbyville is expanding the truck driving program beginning May 4 in the summer trimester to include weekend classes.
Ivan Jones, TTCS director, stated that the center recognizes the need to expand the program to help individuals who are currently employed to keep their jobs while training for a new career. With the new schedule, students may attend the weekend class and still maintain a regular job during normal weekly hours. The expansion is also needed in order meet the current demand for truck drivers in Tennessee. Simply stated, Jones predicts that the new class time will increase enrollment.
Currently, the Center offers a seven-and-half week day class, Monday-Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. (30 hours per week). The weekend class will run for eleven weeks on Saturday and Sunday from 7:00am until 5:30 pm (20 hours per week). Total training hours for both classes are 216 hours. The program involves classroom work, yard driving and road driving. The training prepares the student for both the written and skills parts of the commercial driver’s license exam (CDL).
Program costs are estimated at $1,500, which includes tuition, drug test fees, liability insurance, books and licensing fees. Some students may qualify for the Wilder-Naifeh Technical Skills (lottery) grant.
