Hornets raise $7K for leukemia society
Highland Rim School Beta Club members pictured here conducted the drive for Pennies for Patients, then collected the money from classrooms and counted it daily.
For the 2012-2013 school year, Highland Rim School raised more than $7,492 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Patients program, surpassing this year’s goal.
This year, the Pennies for Patients Tennessee State coordinator, Connie Hood, asked if the school wanted to be part of the Mega School Initiative. To qualify, the school had to earn $2,000 more than the previous year’s total in order to win prizes. The previous year’s total was $5,125, which made Highland Rim the seventh highest fundraising school out of 400 schools in the Tennessee Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
When Highland Rim School started participating in Pennies for Patients in 2010, they raised $2,500.
This philanthropy project is school-wide and conducted by the Beta Club, sponsored by LaShae Casey and coordinated by Eagin Evans, school counselor. Beta Club members collected and counted the money daily for classroom totals.
Highland Rim students in teacher Dana Casey’s homeroom raised nearly $562 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Patients. The students won in the sixth through eighth grade division.
Highland Rim School extended a special thank you to First National Bank of Park City for counting and changing out the money daily for two weeks.
All Highland Rim students made cards for “Honored Heroes” in Tennessee, who are cancer survivors or presently fighting cancer.
Highland Rim’s winning class from kindergarten-fifth is Tracy Davis’ class, totaling $630.12, and the middle school winning class is Dana Casey’s homeroom, raising $561.80. These teachers will receive an Office Depot gift card, and the class will receive a pizza party.
Gold winners, raising $300 or more in their classes, were Donna Daniel, Tascha Osgood, Tracy Davis (fifth grade) and Denise Tucker, Jenn McCann, Cassie McCallie, Dana Casey, LaShae Casey and Tracy Davis (eighth grade).
Silver winners raising $200 in their class were Mary Ruth Golden, Rebecca Fears, Amy Graham, Brett Spray, Sherry Buchanan, Brandy Dunivan and Janet Gardner.
Bronze winners, raising $100 in their classes, were Debbie Hastings, Jennifer Lamb, Angela Johnson, Heidi Richardson, Peggy Wright, Carol Grant, Debbie Silvey, Lisa Washburn, Cindy Mefford and Heath DeHart.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Patients is a service and philanthropy program that gives students a unique experience making a difference through teamwork. They work together to aid thousands of children and adults in the fight against blood cancers like Leukemia. The money collected is spent on patient and community service, research and public health and professional education.
