St. Patty’s roadblock yields DUIs, citations
In a combined effort Sunday, law enforcement here removed four individuals charged with DUI from the roadway and issued citations for other violations.
Nearly 660 vehicles went through the checkpoints set up on Winchester and Huntsville highways by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department, Fayetteville Police Department, Moore County Sheriff’s Department and Smyrna Police Department as part of the Governor’s Highway Safety Office program. Of those, 40 vehicles were pulled over. Four drivers were issued tickets for other violations and 20 drivers were issued warning tickets. One individual who was a passenger in a vehicle driven by a DUI suspect was charged with public intoxication.
Investigator Doug Boeringer and Deputies Troy Wells, Patrick Murdock and Lance Jeans made the arrests. Lincoln County Sgt. Jeff Bradford said several people thanked law enforcement for getting suspected DUI drivers off the road.
“We’ll be doing more in the future to keep DUI drivers off the road, to keep it safer for other citizens,” Bradford said.
Eddie Ray Vangrift, 54, 25 Dellwoood Drive, Lacey Springs, Ala., was charged with DUI during the roadblock. He was released from the Lincoln County Jail on $1,000 bond.
William Jonathan Cantrell, 34, 143 Hazelwood Drive, Hazel Green, Ala., was charged with DUI. He was released from jail on $500 bond.
Patrick Clemens Stark, 28, 13600 Clay Court, Huntsville, Ala., was charged with DUI. He was released from jail on $1,000 bond.
Joe Edward George, 48, 122 Gill Circle, Petersburg, was charged with DUI. He was released from jail on $500 bond.
