Fayetteville High School’s Skylar McDonald, the defending A-AA state tennis champion, is marked as one to watch in the Spring Sports preseason picks by the Tennesseean.
In 2012, as an eighth grader, McDonald swept the field for the state title.
With her success from last season, the coaches in the district voted that she will not need to compete until May 1-2 in the individual tournament.
But, her schedule in March and April will be full, competing in four USTA Tournaments.
Having moved up to the 16-under age group, she has already been ranked in the top 40 in the south after finishing last year ranked eighth in the south in the 14- and under.
“Moving up, the competition is getting bigger and stronger, and there are no easy matches at any of the tournaments,” Coach Jonathan Brown said. “If she does well in the next few tournaments prior to the district, I would expect her rankings by the end of the summer to be in the top 25 in the south for her age group.
“She does have the potential to win another state title, but this time she will be entered as the favorite,” Coach Brown added. “That makes everyone turn up their game against her when she takes the court. It should be an exciting season.”
