Fabulous Fifties Show kicks off
This year the annual Fabulous Fifties Show hits its 27th year milestone!
Eight shows will run from March 12-23.
The show was birthed years ago, when Peggy Mann saw a variety show in Shelbyville and was inspired to create the show based on that production. She involved Cary Sullivan, who assembled talent and sold tickets, and enlisted Edith McKay to write the script. Thus, The Fabulous Fifties Show began.
Throughout the 27 years of the show, there have only been five producers. Peggy Mann was the original producer, followed by Jeannie Tucker Brown, Dwight King, Cary Sullivan and Jane Wilcox. These people have pulled off miracles by meeting deadlines, finding last-minute replacements for singers, actors and musicians – even on the night of a performance – arranging schedules and making sure everyone is where they need to be.
“It is a sometimes daunting, but immensely satisfying job,” said Wilcox, producer of this year’s show.
The main writers of the script have been Edith McKay, Dwight King, Winston Brooks, Jeannie Tucker Brown, Deborah O’Connor, and Josh Ogle.
“It is amazing that they can come up with such original and entertaining ideas each year,” Wilcox said.
This year Josh Ogle is the scriptwriter again.
“Some of the themes have been loosely – very loosely – based on ‘The Mickey Mouse Club,’ ‘Gilligan’s Island’, and ‘The Wizard of Oz’.
“There have been original ideas, such as themes about space aliens, genies in a bottle, high school loves and losses. People ask all through the year if we know yet what our next theme will be. It seems that there is always a buzz around Fayetteville about the upcoming Fabulous Fifties Show – even immediately after one season ends.”
The first band members were Edwin McAlister, Danny Shelton, Joyce Eady and Bill Sneed. Throughout the years, the band members have come and gone to include Mike Bradford, Jim Rutledge, Dr. Joe Widner, Danny Carmichael, Jim Hudson, Johnny Stewart, Chris Counts, Mike Moorehead, Steven Moorehead and Sammy Luna, to name a few.
The 2013 band is made up of Dwight King, Mary Jane Porter, Dr. Chris Gafford, Sal Sciacchitano, Steven Wallis, Jerry “JT” Taylor, Dale Pierce, David Powelson and Jeff Barnes.
Another group of very important people is the Backup Singers.
“They begin listening to the songs in November, so that they can learn all of the background sounds and harmonies in each song,” said Wilcox.
Their perfect harmonies lend a professional air to every song.
“This tight-knit group has sung at weddings, churches, nursing homes, community events and birthday parties, just to name a few places,” said Wilcox.
They go by the name of “Simply Fabulous”.
“This name sometimes embarrasses them, but those of us who hear them often definitely agree with the name,” she added.
The Fabulous Fifties Show is now made up of more than 70 very talented people who give at least three months of their time to present the audience with a memorable experience. Not only are there singers, musicians, actors and dancers, but seamstresses, ticket, souvenir and concessions sellers, set designers and builders, artists to paint the backdrop and draw the logo, lighting and sound personnel, advertising experts, a script writer and backstage managers.
The list goes on as there are so many people and businesses willing to give of their time, talents and goods to make this show happen.
“This doesn’t even count the people who are dedicated fans and just spread the word of our show to their friends,” says Wilcox. “Each person that is involved makes a valuable contribution to the efforts of the Multi County Cancer Support Network (MCCSN).”
Ticket prices have been the same for several years so as not to put a strain on people’s pocketbooks. Ticket prices are $15 adults; $5 children three-12 years old; and children three and under are admitted free when held by an adult.
This year’s shows are March 12, 14, 15 & 22 at 7 p.m. and March 16 & 23 at 1:30 and 7 p.m.
Tickets are on sale at Bagley and Bagley, Bank of Lincoln County, Carter’s Drug Store, CB&S Bank, Fayetteville-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce, First Commerce Bank, First National Bank, Lincoln County Trustee’s Office and Region’s Bank.
