It seems like just a few weeks ago that Boxwell Summer Camp was finished for the 2012 season. Now preparations and planning are underway for the 2013 camping season. Registration for summer camp opens the first week in March and the first week session begins June 9.

The Grimes canoe base opens March 11 and even though the weather might be a little cool for canoeing, reservations are already being made for this season and it will fill up fast as usual. This is also a National Jamboree year and registration for this experience has been open for several weeks. With so many things to do it is sometimes hard to decide what to do.

Boxwell Reservation remains the primary summer camp and most Scouts make that choice. This is where many fun activities are available but also the Merit Badge classes that are the key to advancing along the Trail to Eagle that is the ultimate goal of Scouting. This year several new merit badges will be offered at Boxwell for the first time that include some of the completely new merit badges that have been added to the Scouting program. In addition to the new merit badges there are additional activities for first time and experienced campers.

One of the new features this year is a new class on The Eagle Scout rank including requirements for the service project. Planning, and proper preparation of all of the required paper work are covered. This is an excellent opportunity to get first hand assistance from the Council expert. In one session the Council Eagle Registrar will be on hand to provide one on one instruction and counseling. Participation is limited to 30 scouts who are at least 16 years of age and already earned the Life scout Rank. Check with your unit leader if you meet the requirements and are interested in participating in this activity.

One note of interest is that each Camp Director must be certified according to the BSA standards for a Camp Director. Both the Camp Stahlman and Camp Craig directors have many years of experience as camp directors but as you read this they are at scout camping school to be certified again for three more years. This has been a requirement for several years to ensure that each camp director is made aware of any new or revised camping standards. The Middle Tennessee Council has one of the finest camping facilities in the nation and the experienced camp directors are among the finest and most qualified anywhere.

If you are planning on going to Boxwell this year your Scoutmaster has all the information you need to plan a productive weekly program that will provide advancement opportunities and a full fun program so that the summer camp will be a memorable experience. If you would like, The Council web site (MTCBSA.org) has complete information for this camping season so it might be worthwhile to visit this web site for full information. At the home page, click on camping and choose what specific document you would like to review. The most pertinent is The Boxwell Leaders Guide.
