FPU’s youth board learns about telecom
Last month the Fayetteville Public Utility Student Utility Board (SUB) learned about the utility’s Telecom Department and all the telecommunication services it offers.
The day included an overview of how FPU entered the telecom business. SUB members watched as Tommy Brewer, service installer, constructed and installed fiber service for cable and internet at a customer’s home. The group also watched as Eric Reeves, supervisor of the Telecom Department, showed them how fiber is spliced during a new install using the fiber fusion splicer.
“Today was a great learning experience,” says Makinsie Gault, SUB president.
“It is simply amazing how much FPU does on a daily basis,” says Meghan Sullenger, SUB member. “I love having the opportunity to learn more every month at our SUB meetings.”
Since the SUB meetings began for the current school year, students have participated in special focus days at FPU that included the customer service department, water plant operations and wastewater plant operations. In the following months, students will visit with employees of the natural gas and electric departments.
February’s meeting will focus on FPU’s Channel 6, and the SUB members will be interviewed and introduced to customers as part of Channel 6’s programming for the month.
FPU’s Student Utility Board includes seven high school seniors, six from Lincoln County High School and one from Riverside Christian Academy. These students include Meghan Sullenger, Makinsie Gault, Morgan Helums, Rena Andrews, Ashley Mitchell, Jonathan McLeod and Brian Rozar. In 2013-2014, FPU will welcome students from Fayetteville High School in the Student Utility Board youth program.
