Falcons drop two in district hoops play

Tuesday night the second place Lincoln County High School Falcons hosted the district-leading Tullahoma Wildcats and took a tough loss. Then Friday night LCHS went down on the road to Columbia.
With Lawrence County’s 80-68 upset over Tullahoma Friday night, the Falcons finish regular season district action in third place. Tullahoma is 9-1; Lawrence County, 7-3; Lincoln County, 6-4; Columbia, 5-5; Franklin County, 2-8; and Shelbyville, 1-9. Overall the Falcons are 16-10.
Lincoln County is the host school of district tournament action. In the first round the Falcons will host Shelbyville Friday night. Saturday four games will be played at LCHS, starting at 2 p.m. The boys’ consolation and championship games will be played Tuesday night.
Friday night the Falcons went down on the road to the Lions, 76-70.
Lincoln County opened quickly, up 16-9 at the end of one, but Columbia won the second 23-18. Then at halftime, the Falcons were up 34-32. The Lions took the lead winning the third 21-15 and was on top 53-47 at the end of three. Columbia hung on, taking the final period 23-21 to finish with the win.
The numbers in the game were balanced. The Falcons were 20 of 34 from the paint and 4 of 16 from the arch. From the line, LCHS was 18 of 28.
B.J. Thompson had a double-digit scoring night, putting 19 points on the board and having 11 rebounds; Tradarius Christian had 18; Tyler Jones and Justin Blackwell, 8; Jaquez Thompson, 6; Xavier Talley Hyde, 5; Ty Hadley, 4; and Ty Lewter, 2.

Tuesday night the Falcons went down in a barn burner, 56-49, to the Wildcats. LCHS opened up strong, ending the first quarter on top 11-4. But the Wildcats came back in the second. With 4:39 in the period, Tullahoma took the lead for the first time as the quarter ended 13-12. With the Falcons trailing by three, Ty Lewter put up one from downtown on a loose ball that was all net — but the officials made the call he was out of bounds and the Cats were up 24-21 at the break.
In the third Justin Blackwell knotted it at 34-34 with 1:05 on the clock with a basket and a shot from the line. LCHS won the period 14-12, and the Cats were on top 36-35.
The lead would go back and forth in the fourth. With 5:02 on the clock, B.J. Thompson put the Falcons up 41-39, but that would be the last time LCHS had the lead. Down by six in the final minute, Thompson nailed a three with 38 seconds remaining in the game and with Lincoln County trailing 52-49, but that was a close as it would get. The Wildcats made 13 of 16 from the line in the final stanza to finish with the win.

The Falcons were 16 of 36 inside, 1 of 19 from the arch and 14-22 from the line. The Cat’s won the boards 51-45.
