Fayetteville First United Methodist Church announces two Ash Wednesday services for people in the community. Both services will take place in the church’s beautiful sanctuary.
The noon time service has been planned with the local business community in mind.
“People are invited to begin their lunch break by worshipping with us,” Pastor Tommy Ward said. “The service will conclude by 12:30. We invite people to bring a sack lunch and plan to stay for a time of food and fellowship before returning to work or the rest of your day.”
The 6 p.m. service has been planned for families and people who work out of town and is preceded by a catered meal of spaghetti, salad, rolls, and banana pudding that begins at 5:15 p.m. Drinks are included. Cost is $5 per adult, $3 children 6-12, and free for children under the age of 6. There is a $15 maximum charge to make the meal more affordable for large families. To make reservations for the meal, please contact the church at (931) 433-2251 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of placing ashes (in the shape of a cross) on a person’s forehead or hand. These ashes come from burned palm branches and are symbolic of a person’s sorrow for sin and of a person’s mortality. The ashes are typically worn by the worshipper until they wear off and testify to the Christian belief that God has overcome the ashes of sin and death through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
