As the new director of the Fayetteville-Lincoln County Public Library, I would like to thank the community for all the kind words and support you have shown me. I am settling well into my new position, thanks to the help of a great library staff.

In the coming months, you will see many changes at your library. Topping my new agenda is a children’s program, with separate itineraries for younger and older kids. Regular story hours will become a fixture at the library, with topics intended to supplement the education local children receive at school.

In the near future, I hope to gain ideas for story hour topics by communicating with local teachers and school librarians. I also hope to begin a Mother-Daughter Book Club, geared toward teen and young adult girls. By bringing mothers and daughters together, I hope to help promote literacy while providing a fun environment for girls and women to interact.

Other ideas include programs for older teens like a “support” group run by college students to help those preparing to enter college as first-time freshmen. I would also like to see the library host a tutoring program. As these are but initial ideas, I would love to hear feedback from members of the community.

What would you like to see at the library?

In addition to a children’s program, I will continue improving our Genealogy Room. Lincoln County is fortunate to have such a resource at our disposal. I will diligently work to expand and improve our resources in an effort to encourage and assist all those wishing to trace their family lineages. As a historian, the Genealogy Room holds a special place in my heart, and I hope to see it continuously improved.

Last year, the Friends of the Library devoted its fundraising efforts solely toward improvements for the Genealogy Room, and soon the community will begin to see the fruits of those efforts.

Finally, I am devoted to finishing the library basement as soon as possible. Doing so will open up space for a more expanded children’s section and a conference area for local organizations, among other things. This project will take a great deal of time and money; however, I am confident that with the support of local government, citizens and our terrific Friends of the Library group, we will see this feat accomplished!

If anyone in the community has ideas for new programs or is interested in volunteering to help bring these new programs to life, please feel free to contact me at the library or through email at flclibrary@fpunet.com. I hope to see you all at the library!
