Miss Tennessee Chandler Lawson, who hails from nearby Tullahoma and has visited Fayetteville numerous times, celebrated her 23rd birthday Jan. 12 by finishing in the top 10 of the Miss America pageant.
The finals were televised nationally Saturday evening from the Planet Hollywood Theatre in Las Vegas. Mallory Hytes Hagan, who represented New York but is a native of Opelika, Ala., was crowned the 2013 Miss America.
Ms. Lawson will be in Fayetteville again Feb. 9 for the annual Lincoln’s Got Talent, a benefit for the Humane Society of Lincoln County. Tickets for the event are currently selling.
Ms. Lawson received a $7,000 scholarship as a top 10 finisher and was the recipient of a $2,000 Quality of Life grant earlier in the week for outstanding community service in starting 5 Loaves 4 Kids in her hometown. The organization provides weekend food backpacks for low-income families.
Also a former Miss Chattanooga, she is a political science graduate of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and will use her scholarship winnings to attend the University of Tennessee School of Law after her year of service as Miss Tennessee is completed in June.
She is the daughter of Dr. Dan and Karen Lawson of Tullahoma. Ms. Lawson, who sang the Adele hit “Turning Tables” for her talent presentation Saturday night, is also the fourth Miss Tennessee in the last five years to finish in the top 10 at Miss America.
