Ivey wins ‘Angler of Year’

Angler of the year 02

Toby Ivey

Middle Tennessee Crappie Club congratulates Toby Ivey for winning Angler of the Year 2012.

Toby was presented the AOTY plaque at the MTCC December meeting.

To be AOTY, a fisherman has to end the fishing year with the highest point total. Toby won with 239 points. The points program awards 30 for first place, 20 for second and 10 for third, and 15 for Big Fish and 3 for non-placing participation.

When April came around, Toby was in 12th place behind a field full of really good crappie anglers. Then, in late April, he and his partner that day, Tracy Farmer, won that tourney and the BF pot and things started to turn around. Toby went on to place seven out of the last eight tournaments in 2012 and was still 26 points behind going into the last tournament.

On Nov. 17, the last points tournament of 2102, Toby fished with John Wells, also from Lincoln County.

“This day was a tough day to fish,” Toby said. “The fish just were not biting hardly at all.”

As it got close to weigh-in time, Toby didn’t think he and John had much of a chance to win. They only had four fish to weigh-in and hadn’t caught any fish since early morning. Toby’s partner, John Wells, said,  “You never know, son, what might happen. If it’s the Lord’s will and meant to be, we will win this tournament with just these four fish and you will get AOTY, too.”

Winning a weigh-in with four fish hasn’t happened before in a MTCC tourney, but this day was an exception. As it turned out, the six other boats in the tourney struggled to find biting fish too. Toby and John won that tournament with only four fish weighing 5.88 pounds, and their big fish was 1.97 pounds.

That day gave Toby 45 more points, and he took the lead in the AOTY race by a 16-point margin over another club member from the Manchester area. Toby fished throughout the 2012 season with six different club members and wants to thank all of them for helping him get Angler of the Year 2012.

“If you would like to be part of our crappie club, we would certainly love to have you join us,” Toby said.
