FoL hosting Winter Gala, silent auction

Friends of the Library (FoL) has announced its plans for the Winter Gala and silent auction taking place on Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Fayetteville/Lincoln County Public Library.

“The Winter Gala concludes the 2012 fundraising year to improve the genealogy department at the library and to help repay construction debt,” commented Emily Law, chairman of the board of FoL.

“We targeted the genealogy department this year, because it is one of the most actively utilized areas of the library, and it needs new equipment and resources to make it a more efficient and user-friendly environment,” added Ms. Law.

Tickets for the Winter Gala and silent auction, available at Dixie Smith Insurance Agency and Carter’s Drug Store, cost $35 per person. Tickets will include wine and a walk-around meal of delicious, heavy appetizers prepared by some of the community’s best cooks. In addition to obtaining tickets through Fayetteville’s two local businesses, library supporters and patrons can purchase tickets online by going to the FoL website, flcfriendsofthelibrary.org or going directly to http:// galaathtelibrary.eventbrite. com.

“For the silent auction, Friends of the Library will offer a very diverse and appealing range of products and services for gala attendees,” said Joan Ward, chairman of the silent auction committee. “Some of the items for bidding include artwork by several local artists including Joanna Caldwell, Carl Gleghorn, Toby Penny, and Faye Liddie. There is a two-night condominium in Gatlinburg, a two-night stay at Glen Haven Bed & Breakfast, spa services, jewelry,  photographs, gift baskets, and catered food.

The FoL board has voted to revamp and add to the genealogy department as its 2012 library-services contribution, with a  goal of $7,000 from all 2012 fundraising activities (if raised) allocated toward that stated purpose.

“The genealogy room at the library is actively utilized daily by young and old interested in finding out more about their respective family histories,” said Cathy Powell, chairman of the board of the Fayetteville/Lincoln County Public Library. “Our library is a great place to begin tracing your family lineages, movements, and migration into and around Fayetteville and Lincoln County.

“With the addition of the new equipment and technology that Friends of the Library hopes to be able to buy through their 2012 fundraisers, we will be an even better-informed resource and guide for more involved genealogy research,” she said.

The newly appointed library director, Jill Rael, will also attend the Fol Winter Gala to meet Fayetteville/Lincoln County Public Library supporters and patrons and to answer any questions about her objectives for the library.

“I am very excited to be working with such a dedicated team of community activists. My goal is to bring leadership to the library that will embrace the talents and commitment of Friends of the Library so that we can create better programs that will serve the community even better,” said Ms. Rael. “I look forward to meeting the library patrons at the gala, and I welcome any comments or ideas about library services.”
