The Falcon Academic Team competed against 33 other teams from Tennessee, Kentucky and Georgia and finished fourth in the fall quiz bowl tournament hosted by the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga the Saturday before Thanksgiving.
The varsity fourth-place trophy secures the team’s berth for this year’s state tournament, which will be held in April at Tennessee Technological University. The team’s junior varsity team, captained by Madison Appling, also won a fourth-place trophy in their division.
Even with the fourth place trophy and with J.T. Cobb, one of the team’s seniors, winning a fifth place trophy for individual achievement, the team members weren’t entirely happy. In the quarter-final of the tournament, the team was tied with the students from Martin Luther King Jr. Magnet School, Nashville, a perennial rival. MLK beat LCHS to the buzzer on the last question, pushing LCHS to fourth place. But, Co-coach Kay Campbell sees an advantage to the team’s performance.
“We left Chattanooga just a little bit angry that they had managed to overtake us at the last. And, that kind of anger can help motivate study and practice for our team because we know we’ll face MLK again in the state tournament,” Campbell said.
“And, Mrs. Peterson and I are especially pleased that our JV players brought back a trophy, too. That bodes well for the long-term health of the team.”
